What is IFS?
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a therapeutic approach developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz in the 1980s. It’s based on the idea that our mind is made up of different “parts,” each with its own feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. These parts often conflict with each other, leading to inner turmoil.
IFS identifies three main types of parts:
- Exiles: These are wounded parts that carry painful emotions like shame, fear, or trauma. They are often hidden away or suppressed.
- Managers: These parts try to keep the system safe by controlling situations, avoiding triggers, or maintaining order. They often manifest as perfectionism, anxiety, or people-pleasing.
- Firefighters: These parts act impulsively to put out the emotional “fires” caused by exiles. They might drive behaviors like addiction, anger, or dissociation to numb the pain.
At the core of IFS is the Self, which is the calm, compassionate, and centered part of you. The goal of the IFS method is to help you connect with your Self and guide your parts toward healing and harmony.
